Due to various constraints—such as the need for non-contact inspection, the inapplicability of electromagnetic methods, and the requirement to avoid surface damage—aerospace equipment often has to rely on acoustic testing for defect detection and routine maintenance. Ta-da! That's where our lab steps in. Simply put, we use all kinds of devices to conduct acoustic testing, examining metals and composite materials alike. There are many testing methods, which boil down to two main aspects: how to excite ultrasonic waves and how to receive them. We use ultrasonic waves because their relatively short wavelength enables the detection of subtle defects. I won't go into further detail.

In short, this project required us to build a device, and the deadline for conclusion was fast approaching (the project had been running for several years; I joined only half a year ago, and now it was about to close—we had all the work dumped on us). I'm not questioning the professionalism of the project proposal, but the goal of detecting flaws just a few microns in size does make you wonder if the units were misprinted. Every specification was insanely difficult to meet, and even when met, was difficult to reproduce. Moreover, all the experiments were nearly impossible to control for variables (acoustic waves are truly capricious, especially when involving lasers!). That said, the period was immensely fulfilling—we got together every day and worked hard, then headed out for chicken hot pot at night.

When it came to integrating all the pieces, believe it or not, there's always a way. If data were protected by a dongle, we'd copy it with a USB stick; if computer versions didn't match, we'd wire them together; if programs needed integration, we'd build modular code so each of us had our own page. Matlab, you're a real pain—and don't think you can dodge criticism just because you're a veteran. In the end, the project was wrapped up smoothly, naturally. Though unexpected incidents occurred along the way, you know, things always manage to get concluded. There's nothing to worry about. All you should do is look forward to the next meal, a day of good weather, and a kitten or puppy that lets you pet it.
